There’s a common misconception that not a lot of qualifications are needed for entry level government jobs. Don’t fall into the trap of believing this. Instead, stay ahead of the competition by treating these job openings for what they are – a chance for you to land a secure job with the government. This means that you should make sure that your future employer sees that you’re qualified.

Here’s the question – what exactly are the qualifications needed for entry level government jobs? Of course, it depends on the specific job opening. But since these are entry level jobs, the qualifications needed are basically the same save for a qualification or two.

Here are the basic qualifications needed for entry level government jobs:

A college degree

While it’s true that there are entry level jobs that only require you to be a high school graduate, most of the better entry level jobs at the government require a college degree. This is understandable because there are a lot of demands for these jobs. We can’t blame them for wanting to weed out the high school graduates in favor of the college graduates.
Computer literacy

There’s a good chance that you’ll be in front of a computer most of the time so you need to be computer literate. At the very least, you should know how to use Microsoft Office.
Reading and writing competence

It’s not enough that you know how to read and write. With entry level government jobs, you can expect to do a lot of reading and writing and you can’t expect anyone to answer your questions all the time. You are expected to read and understand memos and instructions and produce documents about them as instructed.
Administrative skills

The U.S. Department of Labor has issued a report saying that majority of the jobs available in the government require administrative skills because a lot of the tasks are very technical and analytical. You’ll need administrative skills in order to do these tasks successfully.

People skills

A lot of these entry level government jobs put you “in the line of fire” by making you deal with people. Remember, you are basically representing the government. For example, you are the DMV in the eyes of the person in front of you who’s trying to get his license. The agency expects you to be a good representative so having good people skills is important.

Willingness to do tasks outside of the job description

There’s a reason why entry level work is called “grunt work”. You are expected to do tasks that no one else wants to do.

Good personal background

Since there’s a good chance that you don’t have previous work experience, government agencies may exert more effort into checking your personal background. This is understandable because you will be working for the government so they’ll be checking for the usual red flags even if they’re just for entry level government jobs.

When you’re going to think about it, the basic qualifications are basically the same with the basic qualifications for entry level jobs in private industries. Of course, you can expect additional qualifications needed depending on the entry level government jobs that you’re applying to but excel in these qualifications and you’ll be off to a great start.
